Miss Dohmen’s December News

Hello everyone! I hope that all of you had a very Blessed Thanksgiving! Can you believe that it is December already? The school year has really been flying by, and the children have been very busy working!

Language Arts

In Reading, the children read the stories: “Who Works Here?”, “A Big Circle” and “Life in the Forest”. We have now reviewed all of the long vowel sounds. Please continue to practice these CVCe sounds. Also, please continue to review short vowel sounds and blends as well. As our spelling and vocabulary list becomes more challenging, please continue to practice the sounds and words. If you have not already done so, please check out www.spellingcity.com for some fun spelling games! Please continue to practice the cards in your child’s box (even the ones that have already been tested). This will help build their sight word vocabulary.

Grammar

In grammar, the children worked on identifying nouns. We have also discussed when to use uppercase letters in writing. We reviewed proper nouns, using special titles for names, and using uppercase letters for the days, months and holidays. We have now moved on to plural nouns: adding –s to show more than one. Please practice this with your child!

Math

In math, we have been working on addition and subtraction. The children have been using stories to make number sentences about joining and separating groups of objects. Now that the math is starting to be a bit more challenging, please continue to review basic facts with your child using flashcards.  This will help them as we continue to move ahead in our book.

Religion

The children took their test on Chapter 4 “We Give Praise to God”.  After we finished the chapter, the children took the test on the whole unit “We Care”. This covered all of the material that the children have learned in chapters 1-4. We have now started Unit 2, “Our Loving God”. In Chapter 5 “God is Our Loving Father“, we discussed how all of the things God created show His love.

Social Studies

In Social Studies, we finished chapter 2, which was about our nation. We talked about following laws in our community. We also talked about the mayor, the governor and the president. The children also participated in a mock election, and had a lot of fun!

Science

In Science, we will now begin chapter 2. We will talk about plants; where they can be found, and what they need to live. We will also discuss the parts of the plant.

Handwriting

The letters that we worked on in the month of November were: Cc, Ee, Ff, Gg and Jj. Please remember that it is important to use neat handwriting when working on homework!
