Mrs. Palenik’s Fifth Grade December News
As we prepare for the birth of Jesus this Advent season, let us all be conscious of the real reason for the season. We are very busy this month in the fifth grade classroom!!
Social Studies: We will soon begin our wonderful pop-up Explorer books. The children really enjoy constructing these together. That will conclude our unit on Exploration. We will then be moving into the study of Jamestown, Roanoke, and Plymouth, the early colonies. We were also busy working on the Geography Bee preliminary rounds. The Bee will take place on January 8th at 1:30 p.m. in the gym.
Science: We just completed our study of matter and its properties. Next we will be studying the Earth and Rocks and Minerals. The students love the hands on with the rocks in this unit.
Math: We are working through our second chapter of the Math text. We have been multiplying decimals and evaluating algebraic expressions. Again, please review the multiplication facts daily with your student. We will be taking the first of the Diocesan Math Assessments this month as well.
Reading: We finished our read aloud novel, Heat. We just recently began reading Project Mulberry. We continue to work on sequencing of events, compare/contrast, and figurative language/metaphors in our new reading textbook. Please use the pearsonsuccessnet.com website for the reading text.
Grammar: The students have completed their work on nouns, both common and proper, as well as possessive nouns. We are currently writing our first of two persuasive essays.
Have a very blessed and peaceful Christmas Season with you and yours. Take time to reflect on the goodness our Lord has provided each and every family in our school.
